Vienna Study Mission | Day Three ⚛

The third day showed just how broad international cooperation in the nuclear field can be — from laboratory analysis to a monitoring system operating on a global scale.

🔵 The morning began at the IAEA laboratories in Seibersdorf. At the Visitor Centre, participants explored the wide range of peaceful applications of nuclear technology before seeing some of them firsthand. The programme included visits to the Environmental Sample Laboratory, as well as laboratories dedicated to insect pest control and plant breeding and genetics.

🔵 Back at the Vienna International Centre, the group met with Rebecca Jovin, Chief of the UNODA Vienna Office, and representatives of the UN Nuclear Young Generation. They shared their own career paths and highlighted opportunities for young professionals interested in disarmament and non-proliferation.

🔵 The programme continued with a meeting with Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission. The conversation centred on the future of the global nuclear test ban and the challenges ahead.

🔵 The group then saw the International Monitoring System in action, visiting ground-based and roof top facilities before moving on to the International Data Centre, where data from across the globe are collected, processed and analysed.

🔵 The working day concluded at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). The discussion focused on international cooperation in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space and the potential of space technologies to contribute to sustainable development.

The weekend is ahead — and with it, a chance to discover the history and culture of the Austrian capital.

Третий день показал, насколько разным может быть международное сотрудничество в ядерной сфере: от работы с образцами в лаборатории до системы мониторинга, охватывающей весь мир.

🔵 Утро началось в лабораториях МАГАТЭ в Зайберсдорфе. В Центре для посетителей участники узнали, насколько широки возможности мирного атома, а затем увидели некоторые из них на практике: посетили лабораторию анализа проб окружающей среды, а также лаборатории борьбы с насекомыми-вредителями и селекции и генетики растений.

🔵 Затем группа встретилась с руководителем Венского офиса Управления ООН по вопросам разоружения Ребеккой Джовин и представителями Молодежной ядерной группы ООН. Они поделились собственным профессиональным опытом и возможностями для молодых специалистов в сфере разоружения и нераспространения.

🔵 Разговор продолжился на встрече с Исполнительным секретарем Подготовительной комиссии ОДВЗЯИ Робертом Флойдом. В центре внимания — будущее запрещения ядерных испытаний.

🔵 В Подготовительной комиссии ОДВЗЯИ участники также увидели, как работает Международная система мониторинга: посетили наземные и расположенные на крыше станции, а затем Международный центр данных, где поступающая со всего мира информация проходит обработку и анализ.

🔵 Рабочий день завершился в Управлении ООН по вопросам космического пространства. Обсуждали международное сотрудничество в мирном освоении космоса и возможности космических технологий в интересах устойчивого развития.

Впереди — выходные, а значит время познакомиться с историей и культурой австрийской столицы.

Vienna Study Mission | Day Two ⚛

The second day began by looking ahead at the future of the nuclear agenda and continued with an exploration of how non-proliferation mechanisms work in practice.

🔵 At the Open Nuclear Network, participants stepped into the role of forecasters: they assessed the likelihood of Iran withdrawing from the NPT and a CTBT signatory conducting a nuclear test, and then examined the factors that could influence both scenarios.

🔵 The highlight of the day was a meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. The discussion covered Iran and proliferation risks in the Middle East, the safety of civilian nuclear facilities during armed conflicts, the ITER project, floating nuclear power units, and the future of peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

🔵 At the Rosatom side event “AI for Nuclear Energy: Deployment, Safety and Scalability,” the discussion focused on practical applications of artificial intelligence in the nuclear sector and the conditions needed for its safe deployment.

🔵 The group then visited the IAEA Department of Safeguards, where participants learned how the Agency verifies the peaceful use of nuclear material and how inspections are conducted in practice.

The day concluded with the plenary session of the 70th IAEA General Conference, offering participants a firsthand look at the work of the Agency’s main annual policymaking body.

Today brings even more hands-on experience: a visit to the IAEA laboratories in Seibersdorf and a closer look at the work of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission.

Венская образовательная миссия | День второй ⚛

Второй день начался с анализа будущего ядерной повестки, а продолжился погружением в практическую работу механизмов нераспространения.

🔵 В Open Nuclear Network участники попробовали себя в роли аналитиков: оценили вероятность выхода Ирана из ДНЯО и проведения ядерного испытания одним из государств-подписантов ДВЗЯИ, а затем разобрали факторы, способные повлиять на оба сценария.

🔵 Центральной встречей дня стал разговор с Генеральным директором МАГАТЭ Рафаэлем Гросси. Обсудили ситуацию вокруг Ирана и риски распространения на Ближнем Востоке, безопасность гражданских ядерных объектов во время вооруженных конфликтов, проект ИТЭР, плавучие атомные энергоблоки и перспективы мирного атома.

🔵 На сайд-ивенте Росатома «ИИ в атомной энергетике: внедрение, безопасность и масштабирование» говорили о практическом применении искусственного интеллекта и условиях его безопасного внедрения в отрасли.

🔵 Затем группа посетила Департамент гарантий МАГАТЭ. Здесь участники узнали, как Агентство контролирует мирное использование ядерных материалов и как на практике проходят инспекции.

Завершился день на пленарном заседании 70-й Генеральной конференции МАГАТЭ возможностью увидеть работу главного ежегодного директивного органа Агентства уже не со стороны, а непосредственно из зала.

Сегодня — еще больше практики: лаборатории МАГАТЭ в Зайберсдорфе и знакомство с работой Подготовительной комиссии ОДВЗЯИ.

From Idea to Project: What Did We Discuss at the International Festival of Youth 2026? ⚛️

As Yekaterinburg bids farewell to the last participants of the International Festival of Youth, it is time to share the highlights of our discussion at the Rosatom stand.

The discussion brought together:

🔵 Anna Zhigulskaya, Director of the Project Office for Internal Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility at Rosatom State Corporation;
🔵 Olga Shkabardnya, Director General of the Energy of Development Autonomous Non-Profit Organization;
🔵 Alena Isakova, Head of the Press Office at the Primakov Center.

The discussion also featured two winners of the Environmental and Socially Beneficial Projects Competition from Egypt and India, as well as a representative of an NGO from Mexico.

One of the key highlights was the presentation of the new round of the Environmental and Socially Beneficial Projects Competition, organized by the Primakov Center jointly with Rosatom State Corporation’s Energy of Development Autonomous Non-Profit Organization.

This year, the competition covers seven countries: Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, India, Türkiye, Hungary, and Bangladesh.

Another new development is the launch of a separate competition track, “The Arctic: A Territory of Innovation and Sustainable Development.”
