🔴 Hackers remotely heat supermarket refrigerators to 50°C, destroying food and causing fires across France
A large-scale cyberattack targeted connected refrigeration systems at hundreds of French supermarkets overnight.
Around 150 Intermarché stores and nearly 100 Coopérative U locations were affected. The attackers reportedly activated the systems’ forced-defrost function remotely, causing some refrigerators to remain at 50°C for approximately six hours.
⠀
Affected stores were forced to discard fresh and frozen food to prevent health risks. The Paris prosecutor’s office said the attack also caused several fires.
The incident affected refrigeration management systems supplied by Danish manufacturer Danfoss. The company said the affected units were running outdated firmware and urged customers to update supported systems or replace legacy equipment.
⠀
France’s cybersecurity agency ANSSI is investigating and coordinating with other European countries over concerns that systems outside France may also be affected.
