💥PolyhaQ international Seminar Series

📍Day 1: Dr. Mohammad Amin, Chief Scientist at D-Wave Systems Inc. and Adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser University

✔From Quantum Gates to Quantum Annealing: Exploring Another Paradigm of Quantum Computing💥

✴Over the past months in the PolyhaQ educational days, we have explored the gate-based model of quantum computing, from discrete-variable (qubit) architectures to continuous-variable (CV) photonic quantum computing. We also discussed variational quantum algorithms, including the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA).

💥But quantum computing is not limited to quantum gates.

💫In fact, one of the most influential approaches to solving optimization problems follows a completely different computational paradigm: Quantum Annealing, rooted in the principles of Adiabatic Quantum Computing. Rather than executing a sequence of quantum gates, computation is performed by continuously evolving a quantum system toward the lowest-energy state of a carefully designed Hamiltonian.

💫Interestingly, QAOA can be understood as a digitized approximation of adiabatic quantum evolution, providing a natural bridge between the gate-based model and the adiabatic approach. In this seminar, we will step beyond quantum circuits to explore the original continuous-time paradigm that inspired this connection.

💥We are delighted to welcome Dr. Mohammad Amin, Chief Scientist at D-Wave Systems Inc. and Adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser University, who will take us inside the world of D-Wave quantum computers.

💫The seminar will cover the fundamentals of quantum annealing, how D-Wave systems operate, recent advances in annealing-based quantum computing, and the practical applications of this unique technology to real-world optimization problems.

💡Whether you are beginning your journey in quantum computing or have followed our previous seminars, this session will broaden your perspective on the diverse paradigms that are shaping the future of quantum technologies.
