NEW: A Richland County sheriff's deputy was injured in a three-vehicle crash Friday while responding to a call for help during the arrest of a wanted man in northwest Columbia.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said the incident began around 11 a.m., when deputies patrolling near 200 Zimalcrest Drive spotted Halley wearing a ski mask and walking around the Carolina Lodge.
Deputies recognized him as a wanted person and tried to approach him, but he ran, according to the sheriff's department.
After a brief chase, deputies caught Halley, who began fighting with them.
Two deputies sustained minor injuries during the struggle.
A Richland County sheriff's deputy responding to help crashed with two other vehicles at the intersection of Harbison Boulevard and Woodcross Drive.
The deputy was taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries, according to the sheriff’s department.
