UPDATE: Thank God, the latest reports confirm that off-duty NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes is in stable condition at Jacobi Medical Center following Friday afternoon's violent attack in the Norwood section of the Bronx.
Detective Mercedes was attacked near Rochambeau Avenue and East 208th Street during what investigators describe as an apparent robbery. He suffered multiple stab wounds during the struggle and, despite being injured, pursued the suspects before eventually collapsing.
His family has reported that he has remained alert and talking while recovering in the hospital.
Detective Mercedes is assigned to the 44th Precinct, and he has been with the NYPD since 2016.
