Austin City Council is sliding $854,872 in “deportation defense” onto Thursday’s consent agenda while the city argues about an ICE shooting. ⠀

The money goes to American Gateways and Catholic Charities.

City papers call the work deportation defense. ⠀

It pays lawyers for detained and non-detained immigrants, including people ICE is trying to remove. ⠀

It pays coaches to help people file motions and hit court deadlines so they can stay. ⠀

It pays work-permit lawyering and federal filing fees. ⠀

Staff listed a goal of helping clients “obtain and maintain public benefits.”

Austin has already sent American Gateways $3.4 million since 2019. ⠀

After Thursday, the four contracts would be authorized up to $6.7 million.

Federal taxes fund the ICE agents to remove illegals. ⠀

City taxes are funding the lawyers who fight ICE to keep illegals here.
