The Ukraine in Russia

Would the country of Ukraine really be that much worse off as a part of Russia, or as a satellite state occupying a position similar to Belarus? Did, or still, do the Ukrainian majority population still want to join the European Union? Could anons kindly explain what happened between the breakdown of the Soviet Union to now, to cause Ukrainians to detest Russia and Russian identity, when both started off as post-Soviet states in the 1990s?
