Наш малыш вырос — собрал по миру всё самое драгоценное.
Из Новой Зеландии к нам пришла идея ритуала начала каждого перформанса.
Устные традиции Непала вдохновили нас делать центром внимания истории обычных людей.
А французский флер Жака Лекока научил передавать историю через язык тела и движение. И можно продолжать это перечислять.
А вот из уст Джонатана Фокса, отвечая на мой вопрос, ну скажи же, когда День Рождения Плейбэка:
8 ноября — день, с которого всё началось. Тогда прошла наша первая репетиция: я собрал команду и впервые поделился своим видением того, каким должен быть наш театр.
Через пару месяцев мы устроили первое выступление — камерное, почти домашнее, только для семьи и друзей (дату уже никто не помнит, но эмоции остались яркими).
Следующее выступление — в детском отделении больницы. Детей привозили прямо в кроватях, вокруг стояли родители и медсёстры. Каждый рассказывал свою историю — и было видно, что эти слова не звучали бы в обычной жизни.
А потом — резкий контраст: вечер академической конференции. Мы начали с того, что прямо на сцене переодевались из уличной одежды в сценические костюмы, бросая вещи через экран в сторону зрителей.
С этого момента всё закрутилось. Мы выступали в самых разных местах — пробуя новое, тестируя идею, стремясь быть настоящим театром сообщества.
Одно из первых выступлений я запомнил особенно: под открытым небом, в парке у Гудзона. Мы выбежали на сцену, сбегая с холма за спинами зрителей, — и с этого бега, кажется, началось наше настоящее движение вперёд.

50 YEARS of Playback Theatre.
Our little one has grown up — gathering treasures from all over the world. 🌎
From New Zealand came the idea of beginning each performance with a ritual.
The storytelling traditions of Nepal inspired us to make the lives of ordinary people the heart of our art.
And the French flair of Jacques Lecoq taught us to tell stories through the language of the body and movement.
And the list could go on…
When I once asked Jonathan Fox, “Come on, tell me — when’s Playback’s birthday?”
He smiled and said:
“November 8 — the day it all began.”
That’s when we had our very first rehearsal. I gathered the team and finally shared my vision of what our theatre could be.
A couple of months later came our first performance — small, intimate, almost home-like, just for family and friends (no one remembers the exact date anymore, but the feelings are still vivid).
Then came something completely different — a performance in the children’s ward of a hospital.
Kids were wheeled in their beds, parents and nurses standing around.
Everyone told their stories — and you could tell these were things they’d never normally say aloud.
After that — a sharp contrast: an evening at an academic conference.
We opened by changing on stage, right in front of the audience, tossing our street clothes over a screen as we stepped into our performing selves.
That’s when the momentum really began.
We performed in all kinds of spaces — experimenting, testing the idea, striving to become a true community theatre.
One of the early performances I remember most vividly was outdoors, in a park by the Hudson River.
We ran down the hill behind the audience, onto the stage by the water — and it felt like that run marked the real start of our movement forward.
