🤓 Have you ever seen rainbow-colored lava?

💫 These colors are created by thin-film interference, the same optical phenomenon responsible for the colors in soap bubbles and oil slicks (and thin film optical coatings)

💥 As fresh pāhoehoe lava cools, an ultra-thin microscopic layer of oxidized minerals or silica forms on its glassy surface

🫧 When light strikes this coating, some reflects from the top of the film while some reflects from the boundary where the film meets the volcanic glass

✨ Those reflected light waves interfere with each other, and depending on the film's thickness, certain wavelengths reinforce each other while others cancel out

🌈 That is what produces such vibrant colors!

🎞 This video was captured by Jay McClellan using image stacking, and it was an honorable mention in the 2023 Nikon Small World in Motion Competition

سلام به همگی 👋 گروه پژوهشیِ Trysail از پژوهشگران باانگیزه برای پیوستن به پروژه‌ی جدید خود دعوت می‌کند.

🧭 درباره‌ی گروه: ما یک گروهِ مستقل و کوچک از پژوهشگران هستیم که در مرزهایِ ناشناخته‌ی فیزیک (از اطلاعات کوانتومی و گرانش گرفته تا کیهان‌شناسی و بیوفیزیک) کار می‌کنیم. رویکرد ما حرکت از اصول اولیه، استدلالِ دقیق ریاضیاتی و ذهنی باز برای استفاده از ابزارهای حوزه‌های مجاور است.

🎯 پروژه‌یِ فعلی: تمرکزِ این همکاری رویِ پروژه‌یِ «Optimized Chiral Quantum Random Walks» خواهد بود.
