🎯 Tech Tip Tuesday: From OpticStudio to Speos — Camera Models with Diffraction Effects

📸 High-quality camera-based imaging systems are essential across automotive, consumer electronics, industrial inspection, and medical imaging. Yet validating system-level image quality in realistic 3D environments has traditionally required costly physical prototypes or fragmented simulation workflows.

🔬 Reduced Order Models (ROMs) in Zemax OpticStudio address this challenge by capturing a continuously expanding set of optical behaviors, including distortion as well as geometric and chromatic aberrations. The latest-generation ROM, available since 2024, has been validated across diverse lens architectures—delivering results consistent with full-geometry models at significantly faster simulation speeds.

✨ At the same time, diffraction effects can limit image quality, making ray-based methods alone insufficient.

🤓 This week’s tip:

Coming soon: Move from full optical geometry to Reduced Order Models (ROMs) to accelerate system-level image simulation—without sacrificing fidelity.

With Ansys Zemax OpticStudio + Speos, you can:

✅ Convert detailed lens designs into compact ROMs
✅ Capture key optical effects including distortion, geometric & chromatic aberrations
✅ Incorporate diffraction effects for more physically accurate image quality
✅ Import directly into Speos for full-scene simulation at significantly faster speeds

The result?

👉 Earlier image quality validation
👉 Reduced reliance on physical prototypes
👉 A streamlined path from lens design to system-level analysis

🎥 Want to see this workflow in action? Join our upcoming webinar:

From OpticStudio to Speos: Camera Models with Diffraction Effects
📅 July 16, 2026
🕘 Session 1: 9:00 AM EDT
🕑 Session 2: 2:00 PM EDT

🔍 You’ll learn:

• How to generate camera ROMs in OpticStudio, including diffraction effects
• How to transfer ROMs into Speos
• What image effects are captured in the reduced model
• How ROM-based simulation supports system-level camera validation
• Example use cases in camera design and image quality assessment

👩‍💻 Speakers:

• Sebastien Noygues, Technical Product Management, Staff Engineer
• Laleh Mokhtarpour, Solutions Engineering, Staff Engineer

💡 Whether you're working in automotive, consumer electronics, industrial inspection, or medical imaging, this workflow helps transform how you validate image quality.

👉 Register now to explore a faster, end-to-end path from lens design to full-scene camera simulation.

⏳ Still time to apply for a fully funded PhD position at the University of Insubria - Lake Como, Italy 🇮🇹

The general call for the 42nd PhD cycle is open until 6 July 2026, 12:00 noon (CEST):

Among the open positions, our group offers a dedicated, fully funded PhD 👇

🔬 The project - ERC Consolidator Grant "QuNIm"
Two-photon absorption and second-harmonic generation are the workhorses of nonlinear microscopy, yet they are intrinsically weak and rely on high optical intensities. QuNIm investigates experimentally whether quantum-entangled photons can make these two-photon processes more efficient - a route that could lower the light dose delivered to delicate biological samples in multiphoton fluorescence and nonlinear imaging.

🧪 What you will do
- Design, build and characterize a source of entangled photons based on Parametric Down Conversion in the high-gain regime
- Study the quantum enhancement of second-harmonic generation (SHG) and two-photon absorption (TPA), and apply it to imaging

💶 Funding
- Annual gross stipend: €21,000 — above the standard national PhD minimum, with extra funding for a six-month period abroad
- Generous research funding for equipment, conferences and travel

📍 Where
Quantum and Ultrafast Photonics Lab (QUP), University of Insubria, Como - on the shores of Lake Como
Supervisors: Prof. Lucia Caspani & Prof. Matteo Clerici

📅 Deadline: 6 July 2026, 12:00 noon (CEST)

📩 Interested? Get in touch with us - and please share this with candidates who have a solid background in optics and a serious interest in experimental quantum photonics.

🤔 Can you copy a qubit?

✴️ In classical computing, copying information is trivial.

⚛ In quantum mechanics, it is fundamentally impossible to perfectly duplicate an unknown quantum state.

🔎 This principle, known as the No-Cloning Theorem, is one of the foundations of quantum communication and quantum cryptography.
