🎓 PhD Opportunity in Quantum Control of Emission in Valleytronic Materials
📚 A PhD position is available at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University, in the new group of Christian Frydendahl, focusing on quantum control of light emission in valleytronic materials.
🔎 The project explores how monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) can be used to create electrically driven sources of circularly polarized light. By using the Valley Hall effect to control which electronic valley charge carriers occupy, the aim is to develop a new light-emitting diode geometry that can produce circularly polarized light through electrical excitation.
⭐️ The research combines 2D materials, nanofabrication and optoelectronic characterization. You will fabricate and study hBN-encapsulated TMDC devices and investigate their emission using polarization- and time-resolved spectroscopy at room and cryogenic temperatures.
✨ The project also includes a planned six-month research stay at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), where you will develop nanophotonic cavities for integration with the new diode design.
🗓 Start date: February 2027
⏰ Application deadline: 01.11.2026
You will work on:
🔹 van der Waals stacking of hBN-encapsulated TMDC monolayers
🔹 Nanofabrication using EBL, RIE and metal deposition
🔹 Polarization- and time-resolved spectroscopy
🔹 Optoelectronic characterization at room and cryogenic temperatures
