🏫 The DAWN Group within the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics and Expertise Center for Climate Extremes at the University of Lausanne (UNIL) is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position lasting up to 5 years.
📘 The position centers on pioneering research at the intersection of atmospheric physics and artificial intelligence.
🔬 Research Scope & Custom Project Proposal
🔎 Candidates are expected to propose a creative research idea spanning atmospheric physics (e.g., aerosol–cloud interactions, atmospheric convection, tropical meteorology, extremes) and scientific machine learning (e.g., causal ML, hybrid physics–AI modeling, generative modeling, operator learning).
🗂 Candidate Profile & Qualifications
📚 Education: Master's degree (completed or expected before start date) in Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, Physics, Applied Math, Statistics, Computer Science, or Data Science.
⚙ Technical Skills: Strong scientific programming and data-analysis skills (preferably Python) with experience handling large scientific datasets or numerical models.
🆎 Languages: Fluent in English (French or German are not required).
💰 Salary, Funding & Key Dates
Salary & Perks: Annual salary scaling from ~CHF 54k (Year 1) to ~CHF 63k (Year 5), plus 5 weeks paid holiday, computing hardware/GPU access, conference travel, and publication funding.
🗓 Target Start Date: March 1, 2027.
