🎓 I'm looking for highly motivated and passionate Master's and PhD students through the University of Ottawa to join my research group at the National Research Council Canada and work on photonic integrated circuits (PICs) designs for ultrafast, secure free-space laser communications for next-gen satellite constellations.
You'll be working at the intersection of:
📡 Free-space optical (FSO) satellite communications
🔬 Silicon photonics design and fabrication
🛰 Optical ground stations
🤩 This is hands-on experimental and/or simulation research with real-world impact, by designing the chips at the heart of the telescope receivers, enabling high-bandwidth, turbulence resistant, interference-resistant optical links between satellites and ground stations that bring data speeds into the 100s of Gbps from the current limits of what Starlink and other RF-to-ground comms constellations can support.
🗓 Positions are available for a Fall 2026 or Winter 2027 start.
🔎 If you have a background in photonics, optics, electrical engineering, or physics, and you're excited about pushing the limits of what's possible in space communications using silicon nanophotonics, reach out to me directly on LinkedIn.
