The focus of this PhD position is the PREFACE Trial, which investigates the clinical efficacy of two forms of supplemental folate: folic acid and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). While folic acid supplementation is widely recommended from preconception through lactation to prevent neural tube defects and support fetal development, the increasing use of 5-MTHF—also approved by Health Canada—raises important questions about their interchangeability.
