Scientists have documented the first clear case of a chimpanzee "civil war" in Uganda, where the massive Ngogo community permanently fractured into two rival factions following a leadership change.

Over years of observation, researchers recorded persistent, lethal violence that suggests internal social tensions—rather than external political or religious factors—can drive collective aggression.

As lead author Aaron Sandel concludes, "This study encourages a reevaluation of current models of human collective violence."
