Happy Mabon witches. 🖤🍂🌙

As the wheel turns and autumn gathers beneath the moon, I find myself returning to an old piece of mine "The Lament of The Beneviento" published a year ago by Level Ground Comics in their "Torches: Fires That Fuel Change" anthology.

This work was inspired by the janare of Benevento, the witches of Southern Italian folklore whose legend became entwined with the great walnut tree said to have stood along the banks of the Sabato.

Benevento has a particularly fascinating history with witchcraft and the old gods. The cult of Isis, the Egyptian goddess of the moon, once flourished there, and Emperor Domitian is said to have erected a temple in her honour. Within this tradition, Isis became associated with a divine trinity alongside Hecate (fellow Hecate devotee here), goddess of the underworld, and Diana, goddess of the hunt. Three figures intimately connected with magic, the moon, and the mysteries of the night.
