A panther is a large, powerful wild cat, but the term is used differently: it often refers to a black jaguar or leopard (black panther) due to a melanistic (dark) coloring, or to the puma (cougar/mountain lion) in North America, or jaguar in Latin America; zoologically, "Panthera" is the genus for big cats like lions, tigers, jaguars, and leopards.
