I think the moment everything changed was when I realized people were not just people to me, but entire lives I could never fully understand. When I was younger, the world felt centered around my own thoughts, my own problems, my own days, as if everyone else only existed in the background of them.
But then there are moments that force your eyes open. A girl at work kept coming late because of family problems, hospital visits, things nobody bothered to ask about before judging her for it. One night after she was written up, she told me she liked sitting where she could see the door because she had been abused when she was younger. And suddenly something as small as where someone chooses to sit no longer felt small at all.
It made me realize how little we truly know about the people around us, how every stranger is carrying memories, fears, routines, grief, and experiences invisible to everyone else. Since then, I can’t look at people the same way. Every person I pass feels like a world I’ll never completely see, and sometimes the weight of realizing that makes life feel both heavier and more meaningful at the same time.
