🇺🇸⚖️ US Sanctions International Criminal Court Hours After Former Judge Who Accused Israel of Genocide Wins Nobel Peace Prize
The Trump administration has imposed sweeping sanctions on the International Criminal Court, threatening to cut off its banking, insurance, software and other essential services.
The announcement came just hours after former ICC judge Navi Pillay was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Pillay also chaired the UN commission of inquiry that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, findings the Israeli government rejected.
Washington has repeatedly targeted the ICC over its arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as its previous investigation into alleged US war crimes in Afghanistan.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the ICC a “rogue court” and delivered an extraordinary ultimatum:
“Either the ICC will end its threats, or we will end the ICC.”
Rubio also demanded that Washington’s allies rein in the court, invoking their dependence on American military protection.
The sanctions could effectively cripple the tribunal by restricting access to financial institutions, technology providers and other essential services.
The ICC condemned the measures as an attack on international law and vowed to continue its investigations.
