Look, the reality is that they use religion as a surrogate identity replacement for ethnicity. We can't be allowed to identify as our race. Christianity teaches race blindness. But as an Abrahamic religion it also teaches theocratic exclusivity (until which point they merge the Abrahamics into one - which is also in the works).

Thus, when they wanted to open the floodgates to other RACES who carry with them other RELIGIONS, of course they needed break down an identity barrier which was keeping the populace more or less ideologically homogenized.
