We are hiring a doctoral #researcher (PhD student)
I am pleased to announce a 4-year fully funded PhD scholarship within the PhD in Economics at Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies (Pisa), funded by the ERC Synergy Grant SUSTECH.

💰 Duration: 4 years (≈1.5 years of training + 2.5 years dedicated to the thesis)

🔎 Research Focus
The SUSTECH project studies the development of toxic and hazardous chemicals, combining insights from innovation economics and computational chemistry

Possible research activities include, but are not limited to:
• Analyzing inventive activity related to toxic and hazardous chemicals in the chemistry industry
• Studying the selection of hazardous technological trajectories over safer alternatives
• Constructing novel datasets and indicators to track innovation related to chemical toxicity, safety, and environmental impact (e.g., patents, inventors, firms, and technologies)
• Investigating how regulatory frameworks, firm strategies, and inventor characteristics shape technological choices in the development of hazardous chemicals
The exact research agenda will be developed together with the supervisors and should contribute to the broader objectives of the SUSTECH project.

👩‍🎓 Who should apply?
We welcome applications from candidates with:
✔️ Strong interest in chemistry-based innovation
✔️ Quantitative and empirical research skills (data analysis, econometrics, etc.)
✔️ Background in economics or disciplines related to the project
