🇩🇰🔓 Denmark suffered a data leak involving 8.8 million people

A security scandal has erupted in Denmark over the state’s Civil Registration System, CPR. As Politiken reported, the small IT company Pays ApS, which had legal access to the register, used the password “123456” for at least three accounts. One of them had administrator privileges. As a result of the cyberattack, an unauthorized person gained access to the system containing the personal identification numbers of around 8.8 million people.

According to the information available, the attacker was able to access the register for 21 days and 17 hours. The breach only became known almost two weeks after the suspicious activity had ended. Pays confirmed that its access had been compromised. Following the incident, Danish authorities sent warnings about compliance with security requirements to 1,039 organizations that have access to the state register.

While European governments talk about cyber threats, digital sovereignty, and the need for billion-euro investments in information security, the personal data of millions of people is protected by the password “123456.” The system administrator did not even consider it necessary to think of something more complicated. To crack such protection, you do not have to be a computer genius—you only need to know the first six digits.
