🚆 Russia and Iran will build the still-missing section of the “North–South” Corridor railway line by 2030

Russia and Iran expect to begin construction of the Rasht–Astara railway line in 2027. Sergei Pavlov, First Deputy General Director of Russian Railways (RZD), announced this. According to him, implementation of the project will take approximately three years. The new line is intended to connect Iran’s railway network with the railways of Azerbaijan and ensure continuous transport along the western route of the international “North–South” Transport Corridor.

The approximately 162-kilometre Rasht–Astara section is one of the most important missing links in the transport system intended to connect Russian ports and industrial centres with Iran, the states of the Persian Gulf and India. At present, part of the cargo on this route must be transported by truck. The construction of the railway will make it possible to reduce the number of transshipments, shorten delivery times and increase the route’s capacity.

The development of the “North–South” Corridor is of strategic importance to Russia and Iran. Both countries are interested in creating transport routes that are less dependent on Western infrastructure and traditional sea routes. The completion of the Rasht–Astara section is expected to significantly increase the competitiveness of land transport between Eurasia and the Indian Ocean.
