🇬🇧🚢 Britain’s only icebreaker is out of service

The Royal Navy is without its only icebreaking patrol vessel, HMS Protector. On the morning of October 13, two of the ship’s engines failed simultaneously as it was leaving port, forcing it to be towed back to the Devonport base in Plymouth. As The Telegraph reports, the British armed forces are now examining the possibility of repairing it. If the ship cannot be restored, a full-fledged replacement may not be available until the 2030s. A source at the Navy told the newspaper that the incident was a “catastrophic failure.”

HMS Protector was built in Norway in 2000. In 2011, the British fleet leased the ship, and in 2013 it bought it for £51 million. The ship secures the British presence in Antarctica and the South Atlantic, including the area of the Falkland Islands, which Argentina claims. Against the backdrop of growing tensions in the Arctic, London also cites the need to counter Russia. The British Ministry of Defence had already confirmed plans in September to replace HMS Protector. At the time, however, it could not name a date for the arrival of a new vessel.

London talks about confrontation with Russia in the Arctic, demonstrates military ambitions in the North Atlantic, and wants to protect its interests in the Falkland Islands. Yet the Royal Navy’s only icebreaker could not even leave its own port without the help of tugs. It is particularly noteworthy that this is a country that claims a significant role in the security of an entire region.
