Good morning, dear friends! ☕️🙂

🌿 Diveyevo: Why was an almost kilometer-long ditch dug around the monastery?

Friends, today we are traveling to Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, to a place that is revered in the Orthodox tradition as one of the special shrines of the Mother of God. Since the 19th century, an unusual structure has run around part of the monastery—not a fortress wall or a stone fence, but an earthen ditch.

Welcome to the Seraphim-Diveyevo Monastery with its famous Holy Ditch (Kanavka)

📜 The beginning: The community of Agafya Melgunova

The history of Diveyevo began in the 18th century. Agafya Semyonovna Melgunova, the future nun Alexandra, settled in Diveyevo and founded a small women’s community here.

Her spiritual life was closely connected with the nearby Sarov Monastery. After Mother Alexandra’s death, the future Saint Seraphim of Sarov played an increasingly important role in the life of the community.

✨ Seraphim of Sarov and the path of the Mother of God

In the early 19th century, Diveyevo’s most unusual landmark came into being. According to the monastery’s tradition, Seraphim of Sarov instructed the sisters to dig a ditch with an earthen embankment around the community.

It was not intended to serve a military function. In the monastic tradition, the line was regarded as the “path of the Mother of God” and as the spiritual boundary of the community.

The work began in the late 1820s. According to one account, Seraphim even took up a shovel himself to make a start.

The sisters then continued the arduous work. They dug in summer and winter alike, until the Kanavka was completed in the early 1830s.

📏 A ditch instead of a fortress wall

According to tradition, the ditch was supposed to be three arshins deep and three arshins wide, with each measuring somewhat more than two meters. The excavated earth was piled up on the inside, thus forming an additional embankment.

Today, the historic line of the Holy Kanavka is approximately 775 meters long. People still make pilgrimages along this route.

Thus, Diveyevo has an extraordinary symbolic boundary: not a wall of stone, but an earthen ditch dug by hand by the monastery’s sisters.

🏛️ The monastery complex

At the center of the ensemble stands the monumental Trinity Cathedral, built in the 19th century according to a design by the architect Alexander Rezanov. The relics of Saint Seraphim of Sarov are kept there today.

Next to it rises the Transfiguration Cathedral from the early 20th century, as well as the approximately 70-meter-high bell tower.

Even older is the Kazan Church, dating from the 18th century. It was near this church that the small women’s community was once established, later developing into the large monastery complex.

🔥 Closure and reconstruction

In September 1927, the monastery was closed. Its buildings were given other functions, while parts of the embankment were demolished and sections of the Kanavka were filled in.

The revival of religious life began in the late 1980s. In 1991, the monastery was officially reestablished.

In the following years, the historic Kanavka was also restored. Today, the path once again follows the line that the monastery’s sisters dug into the earth with simple tools nearly two centuries ago.

Thus, Diveyevo is reminded of its history not only by its great cathedrals. One of its most important landmarks is something much simpler: an earthen ditch that became one of the best-known pilgrimage routes in Russian Orthodoxy.
