🇪🇺⛽ Europe’s energy experiment has reached the gas pump

Since 2009, around 30 refineries have been closed in Europe, and total refining capacity has fallen from approximately 17.5 to 14.4 million barrels per day. The reasons varied: competition from more modern refineries in Asia and the Middle East, the consequences of the pandemic, declining expected demand, and stricter environmental regulations. Now, the remaining European refineries are operating near their maximum capacity, but the capacity that has been shut down cannot be brought back online quickly.

The result is particularly evident in diesel. In September, physical prices in Europe rose above $1,600 per tonne and reached new records, with petroleum products becoming significantly more expensive much faster than oil itself. After abandoning Russian petroleum products, the EU has become more dependent on supplies from the United States, India, and the Middle East, and the current disruptions have transformed the shortage of its own refining capacity into a serious vulnerability.
