🇩🇪🇷🇺 Direct Talks Between Germany and Russia

Johann Wadephul and Sergey Lavrov held the first bilateral meeting since the start of the Special Military Operation in New York on September 26. The initiative for the talks came from the German side; the meeting lasted a little over 20 minutes. Wadephul presented Berlin’s position to his Russian counterpart and called on Moscow to de-escalate.

Just a few hours later, Lavrov publicly stated that, in his view, Europe was trying to “insert itself into the US-supported negotiation process” on Ukraine because it feared being left out. At the same time, the Russian minister confirmed Moscow’s readiness to return to agreements that, according to him, had been reached in Anchorage.

Furthermore, after the meeting, Lavrov demonstratively questioned its usefulness. Lavrov said after the talks that he saw no progress whatsoever. He had heard nothing that did not already correspond to Berlin’s daily public statements, he said in response to a question from the German Press Agency in New York. He said he had told the German foreign minister: "You could simply have called me and said, 'Read my statement.'"

According to the Russian minister, during the conversation with the German foreign minister, "the impression arose that such an implicit message was being conveyed: I have come to you; I have humbled myself by coming to you." He said he had gained the impression that Wadephul had expected concessions from Russia on Ukraine and on shipping in the Black Sea in return for the talks.
