The American weekly magazine The Week devotes its new issue to the Republicans’ electoral problems and to Trump personally, from whom many candidates of his party are currently trying to distance themselves. The magazine lists the dissenters:
John Husted, Mike Rogers and Ashley Hinson — Senate candidates from Ohio, Michigan and Iowa — called for an end to the war with Iran.
Iowans “should not have to pay their bills at the gas station or at store checkouts,” said Hinson, who conspicuously skipped a rally held in the state by Vice President J. D. Vance.
In Florida, gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds removed numerous mentions of Trump from his website, and Miami-area Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar released an advertisement saying that Trump’s deportation campaign had “gone too far.”
These candidates “can read election-poll results,” a Republican strategist told the newspaper Politico. — “They know that Trump is kryptonite.”
The magazine points out that the Republicans’ biggest electoral problem has become the sharp rise in fuel prices, particularly diesel prices, which has dealt a severe blow to their poll numbers in agricultural states. For Trump, the authors say, this situation is “the beginning of the end.” At the same time, Trump himself is attacking Iran, Cuba and all sorts of others at the UN, while pretending not to notice the problems his party is facing in the midterm elections.
