“The West is in free fall—and the worst thing about it is that we were warned, but did not want to listen” — Owen Jones in The Guardian

The West is going through a crisis whose causes have built up over decades. After the end of the Cold War, a sense of final victory emerged: the Western economic and political model appeared to have no alternative. Accordingly, it was believed that this model could be spread throughout the world without giving too much thought to the possible consequences.

Yet there were warnings even then. Diplomats and analysts pointed to the risks of “shock therapy” in Russia, the consequences of supporting radical groups in Afghanistan, the dangers of military interventions, and the growing decoupling of the financial sector from the real economy. But these warnings repeatedly went unheeded.

At the same time, within Western societies, an increasing amount of wealth became concentrated in the hands of owners of capital and other assets, while the wages of many people stagnated and the former certainty of steadily rising living standards gradually faded. The 2008 financial crisis further intensified mistrust: The system was saved, but ordinary citizens had to bear a substantial share of the consequences.

Today, the discontent that has built up over the years is increasingly erupting in political radicalization and the search for simple scapegoats—migrants, minorities, “wokeness,” or the establishment. The article’s central thesis, however, is different: Today’s crisis did not arise suddenly. Warnings were issued many years ago about its causes and underlying conditions—but at the time, people did not want to listen to them.
