🇰🇵 The USA, South Korea and Japan once again want the complete denuclearization of North Korea. The only question left is—how

At their meeting in New York, the foreign ministers of the USA, South Korea and Japan once again reaffirmed “the firm commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea”. At the same time, the three countries called for cutting off the sources of revenue that Pyongyang uses to finance its nuclear and missile programs, and called on North Korea to return to dialogue. The statement was published by Yonhap on the morning of September 22; South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also published the results of the meeting.

But the practical question is becoming increasingly interesting. Pyongyang declares its nuclear status irreversible, while South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is now proposing a completely different sequence: first, easing some of the sanctions in exchange for freezing the development of the nuclear program, and only afterward moving toward denuclearization.

The goal remains the same—“complete denuclearization.” However, the instruments are gradually becoming noticeably more pragmatic: even Seoul is no longer speaking of immediate disarmament, but initially of trying to at least halt the further expansion of the arsenal.
