On Sunday, “an examination of the catastrophe” began at CDU headquarters following the state elections, in which the party of Chancellor Merz failed to enter the state parliament for the first time in its history. Today, the examination continues.

In the CDU, there has long been talk of replacing the failed chancellor at least as party chairman. Voters do not believe that he will lead the country out of the crisis; the reforms are jeopardized by the conflict with coalition partner the SPD. A new chairman would be a signal that Merz is no longer aiming for the chancellorship.

The French television channel TV5Monde criticizes Merz’s slowness. Poland’s Gazeta Wyborcza recalls that it was precisely he who doubled the AfD’s polling figures by promising to reduce them. Rzeczpospolita delivers the rest: “Merz, whose CDU is in crisis, sees no reason to resign.”
