Kenroku-en Garden, Japan
Located in Kanazawa, Kenroku-en is one of Japan’s most celebrated gardens and one of the country’s Three Great Gardens.
A short walk from Kanazawa Castle, its history dates back to the 1620s, when it was developed by the powerful Maeda family during the Edo period.
Once part of the castle’s outer grounds, the 25-acre garden opened to the public in the mid-1870s.
At its heart lies Kasumi-ga-ike Pond, home to the iconic Kotoji Toro stone lantern. With its distinctive two-legged design, the lantern embodies the Japanese appreciation of wabi-sabi: simplicity and natural beauty.
