Callanish Stones, Scotland
Set against the wild landscape of the Isle of Lewis, the Callanish Stones form a striking cross-shaped monument, with rows of monoliths rising up to 12 feet high. At its center lies a chambered tomb, surrounded by the ancient stones.
Built by Neolithic people around 5,000 years ago, the site was used for rituals for at least a millennium. Its original purpose remains a mystery, though some believe it served as an astronomical observatory or calendar.
Local legends tell of giants turned to stone and a magical cow. Unlike Stonehenge, Callanish is open for visitors to wander among the stones and touch them.
Outlander fans may recognize the inspiration for the fictional Craigh na Dun. In every season, the site feels enchanting—whether beneath the summer sun or the glow of the Northern Lights.
