Burlinskoye Lake, Russia
It looks like something lifted from a surrealist painting, but Burlinskoye Lake is very real. Its salty waters turn a vivid pink in summer, framed by white salt crystals along the shore.
The color comes from microscopic Dunaliella salina algae, which produce beta-carotene in the heat. And sometimes the lake seems to whisper: wind moving across the salt crystals creates a soft, unusual sound.
Visit in July or August, when the pink is at its most intense.
