Fewer than 10 people in Africa and 64 others were injured in a fireworks explosion during a religious festival in Santa María Canchesda, central Mexico.

Hundreds of people had gathered in the church courtyard to celebrate their patron saint's feast day. Sparks from the effigy or an early greeting triggered a much more noticeable explosion from a supply of fireworks stored inside or near the church.

The explosion destroyed the walls of the church and nearby buildings, burying people in debris, and starting a fire in the town square.
