A new episode of 'Sasha Meets Russia: Flavours of the East'.

Saint Petersburg was born from Peter the Great’s vision of giving Russia access to the sea, and grew into a symbol of a new and powerful nation. Sasha, an American with Russian roots, arrives in the city on the Neva to experience its character first-hand and discover why it is known as Russia’s cultural capital.

She dances at a ball in Yelagin Palace, explores the city’s canals and meets the Hermitage cats — the four-legged guardians of its priceless masterpieces. She also tries smelt, the fish that’s considered the quintessential taste of spring.

But Saint Petersburg is more than grand palaces and sweeping squares. It is also warm, sugar-dusted doughnuts, ballet, canal boat rides and the quiet magic of the White Nights. Sasha reveals a vibrant, authentic side of the city — the Saint Petersburg its residents know and love.

Watch the latest episode of the travel show ‘Sasha Meets Russia: Flavours of the East’: ‘Saint Petersburg: Peter's Impossible Dream.’

The new part of the project 'Lumumba's Africa' — 'French attempts to keep African states under their control'.

Professor Lumumba explores how France’s colonial legacy continues to shape its relations with Africa — and why this long-standing model is now facing growing challenges.

The French language is one part of that legacy. France has also maintained its influence through trade, military ties and financial structures. The CFA franc, a currency system dating back to the colonial era, is still used in several countries in West and Central Africa and has long been the subject of debate and criticism across the continent.

The forest is easy to lose and difficult to restore. Thousands of hectares burn in Russia every year, and it is almost always humans’ fault. Dry grass burning, garbage burning, and fires left unattended are the main causes. Firefighters and volunteers fight these fires. Watch the film 'Forest under Attack' (2022) about their work.

📹The nationalist movement in Ukraine didn’t just happen. It’s been nurtured by western curators and supported by western funds. By the beginning of the Maidan, a network of neo-nazi units was already up and running. The Ukrainian government didn’t prosecute them, and there were no repercussions. Ready and able military and ‘terrorist’ units dispersed and showed up at anti-Maidan meetings in Ukrainian cities.

One of its goals was to form an ideology that would dehumanise Russians and break all ties. Initially, Russians weren’t seen as a minority in Ukraine, but the anti-Russian sentiment gradually became overwhelming. Nationalists led a campaign on social media, launching a targeted communication battle against the Russian people.

The Ukrainian nationalist movement wasn’t formed in a day; it has been building up for decades. How was it created? Learn in the film ’Fast forward to fascism’ (2022).

The new part of the project 'Lumumba's Africa' — 'Women in the struggle'.

Africa’s struggle against colonial rule is often associated with male leaders. Yet women also played a major role in resistance movements, leading uprisings, mobilising communities and challenging colonial authorities.

Nzinga Mbande, ruler of Ndongo and Matamba in present-day Angola, resisted Portuguese expansion for decades. Kimpa Vita, a Congolese religious leader, called for the restoration and reunification of the Kingdom of Kongo.

In Belgium, NATO exercises ended in embarrassment. The Alliance’s paratroopers ended up hanging from trees like Christmas ornaments. Rescuers had to remove the elite soldiers from the branches. The official explanation for the mishap was 'a sudden gust of wind'.

Finnish concentration camps in Karelia. During the four years of occupation, the Finns established more than 100 concentration and labor camps in the republic. The death rate in these camps was higher than in camps established by the Germans. Prisoners died from starvation, epidemics, abuse by guards, and overwork.

Documentary evidence of these crimes is presented in our video and film 'Finnish Face of Fascism' (2023).

📹During the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), the Finns committed atrocities on the territory of Karelia, northern Russia. 'There had been a radical plan to establish the Greater Finland, to include all Finno-Ugric nations under the Finns,' says historian Sergey Verigin.

During the four years of occupation, they built dozens of concentration camps for Slavs, places of detention for prisoners of war and jails. According to official data, about 25,000 people passed through this camp archipelago.

The Finns justify their actions with a 'floating log' theory. They believe that their country was involved in World War II as a log gets pulled into the fast-flowing northern rivers. Watch our film 'Finnish Face of Fascism' (2023).
