A family with a child in the US was held at gunpoint because of a smart camera error. And it happened twice.
The first time, the system mistakenly linked the woman’s car to a murder. The vehicle was seized for two weeks, checked and returned. But the licence plate was never removed from the police database. Later, a camera flagged the plate again, and police carried out an armed stop on the highway.
After the ordeal, the woman lost her job. Her 12-year-old daughter is now afraid of the sound of police sirens. The police department, however, ruled that the officers had acted appropriately. The woman is seeking compensation.
Wrongful convictions happen regularly in the US, and sometimes people spend half their lives in prison because of them.
