The Lesser Art: When Family Rupture Becomes Therapy
What happens when the therapeutic process that is supposed to help a person becomes a reason to sever the relationships that have supported them for years?
“The Lesser Art” examines an unsettling parallel between intelligence tradecraft and certain modern therapeutic techniques: the isolation of an individual from family, friends, and other sources of support.
Intelligence operations have long understood that separating a person from trusted relationships can make them more dependent on new sources of information, validation, and authority. The article asks whether something resembling this dynamic can emerge when therapy encourages people to reinterpret family relationships primarily through the lens of trauma, dysfunction, boundaries, or personal autonomy.
There are certainly situations where separation from family is necessary. But there is an enormous difference between protecting someone from genuine abuse and encouraging unnecessary rupture with the people who know them best.
