Suspended high above Hunan’s Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon hangs the bridge known as 云天渡 (Yuntiandu) — “A skyway crossing through the clouds.”

It opened on August 20, 2016, only to be shut down just thirteen days later. The glass remained perfectly intact; the problem was that instead of the planned 8,000 visitors a day, roughly 80,000 showed up. It stretches 430 meters long and 6 meters wide, with 300 meters of sheer empty space beneath your feet. The glass is three-layered and about five centimeters thick. Only up to 800 people are allowed on it at any one time. The architect, Israeli Haim Dotan, wanted the bridge to vanish into the mist, looking like a slender thread tied between the cliffs. He succeeded. From the middle, thrill-seekers can also take the plunge — it’s home to one of the highest commercial bungee jump platforms in the world.

张家界大峡谷 (Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon) isn’t the famous Avatar pillar pillars. It’s a narrow, lush green gorge in Cili County: sheer cliff walls, a rushing stream, and a wooden boardwalk skirting the water. It was once called 烂船峡 (Lanchuan Gorge), or “Rotten Boat Gorge.” Legend has it that wreckage of old boats would wash out from the Shenquan Spring, even though there was no navigable river upstream.
The canyon walls close in so tightly that the sky shrinks to a slender ribbon; the narrowest pass accommodates only one person at a time, with an elevation drop of around 300 meters. From there, it's a three-kilometer trek along the canyon floor beside the 神泉溪 (Shenquan Stream). The rocks are slick with moisture, water veils cascade down, and the wooden path clings directly to the cliffside. Turtles rest near the creek, veil-like waterfalls curtain the path, a short tunnel cuts through solid rock, and cascades catch rainbows after the rain.

Finally, a 15-minute boat ride glides across emerald waters flanked by towering rock walls. You look up, and only then do you realize the sheer void you were standing above.
This is China. This is the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon!
