More than 100,000 people in Japan are now aged 100 or older
Japan has recorded over 107,677 centenarians, the highest number globally, with 88% being women.
Experts attribute this longevity to a diet rich in fish and vegetables, an active lifestyle, and medical progress.
However, the country faces a demographic "existential crisis": the fertility rate has hit a record low of 1.14, and the population is projected to decline by 30% by 2070, with nearly 40% of residents expected to be aged 65 or older.
