Ilya Yefimovich Repin
“On the Field Path. V.A. Repina Walking Along the Edge of a Field with Her Children,” 1879
We often think of Repin as the painter of sweeping, dramatic canvases like *Barge Haulers on the Volga* or *Ivan the Terrible and His Son*. Yet in 1879, he created something entirely different: the intimate, tender scene *On the Field Path*.
The small canvas shows the artist’s closest family. His first wife, Vera Alekseyevna, gently leads their children along a narrow path through an endless field. The scene draws us in: we can almost feel the heat shimmering in the midday air and hear the grasshoppers in the tall grass.
Repin captures both the vastness of the landscape and the quiet happiness of a family together. There’s no drama here—just a sunlit Russian countryside and the warmth of a walk shared. A masterpiece of realism, turning an ordinary moment into pure poetry.
