A touching tribute to Nello and Patrasche in Antwerp — a powerful symbol of loyalty. This marble sculpture by Belgian artist Batist Meunier was unveiled near Antwerp Cathedral in December 2016.
It honors the moving end of the 1872 novel *A Dog of Flanders*: an orphaned boy and his dog, denied entry due to poverty, are found frozen together in the cathedral on Christmas night.
The story deeply touched Asia, entering Japanese school curricula and inspiring a beloved anime. The monument’s subtle detail: the pair lie side by side, gently covered by a blanket formed from the city’s cobblestones — as if Antwerp finally offers warmth to those once rejected.
