Ernst Fuchs’ Apocalypse Chapel
Hidden within the St. Giles Cathedral in Klagenfurt, Austria, lies a hypnotic masterpiece of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. This monumental work belongs to the painter Ernst Fuchs—whom Salvador Dalí himself recognized as a peer in genius.
Fuchs devoted over two decades—1989 to 2010—to this mystical endeavor. It began with a chance encounter between the artist and a priest at Tel Aviv’s airport. Inspired, Fuchs committed three months each year to hand-painting the walls with oil.
Across 160 square meters, the visions of John’s Book of Revelation come alive. Set against Fuchs’ signature neon-blue hue, expressive figures of angels, beasts, and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse intertwine in vivid motion. The immersive experience culminates in a wavelike floor of Carrara marble, flowing as if emerging directly from the altar.
