Giacomo Mantegazza
"There's a mouse!", 1910s

Silk skirts fly up, an expensive fan tumbles to the parquet, and a high-society lady shrieks, leaping onto the chaise longue! The era of stiff portraits—centuries of women posing with frozen, emotionless faces—was officially over. At the turn of the century, European society finally allowed itself sincerity, flirtation, and a touch of healthy absurdity. Everyday life became vivid, ironic, and refreshingly free of pretense.

Look at this poor gentleman: etiquette demands chivalry, no exceptions. There he is, already on his hands and knees, peering under the sofa for a tiny rodent. Women were no longer bound to play perfect statues—they could openly fear, tease mischievously, and laugh loudly at men. This was the beginning of true liberation, even if still hidden beneath layers of elaborate lace.
