A queue at the port of Jakarta, waiting to board Russian warships. People are travelling from neighbouring cities just to step aboard. That kind of interest speaks for itself.
Today, a detachment of Russia’s Pacific Fleet is docked at Tanjung Priok: the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov, the anti-submarine destroyer Admiral Tributs, and the medium sea tanker Pechenga.
Behind every ship like this are people shaped by the sea. The documentary ‘On Deck, Offline’ shows how that happens. It follows cadets aboard the four-masted barque Kruzenshtern as they learn to set sails, stand watch, and climb the masts. This is the school that turns boys into sailors.
