She was the youngest woman on death row in the United States. Christa Pike was 18 years old when she and her 17-year-old boyfriend beat, tortured, and murdered 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. The 1995 case caused a media frenzy and shocked the public: a satanic symbol carved into the victim's chest was found on her body.
But Pike's defense insists that she is also a victim. Her case involves a history of childhood sexual abuse, years of neglect and indifference. Her lawyers are convinced that if she were tried today, a death sentence would be unlikely. The victim's family demands that the execution be carried out.
All appeals for clemency and a stay of execution have been denied. Christa has spent more than 30 years awaiting lethal injection. Her accomplice was sentenced to life in prison.
