The main attribute of a traditional Russian banya is the venik — a bundle of leafy branches used in the steam room. But for the steam to be truly good, the veniks must be prepared properly.

Those in the know make them from birch, oak, or linden in early summer, while the leaves are still young, sturdy, and fragrant. In the steam room, such a venik helps bring on the heat and creates that true banya spirit.
