From the sixteenth century onwards, millions of Africans were forcibly taken across the Atlantic and sold into slavery. Yet even far from their ancestral homelands, they preserved elements of their cultural heritage, which went on to become an integral part of the cultures and traditions of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Professor Lumumba explains how the descendants of enslaved Africans sought to reconnect with their ancestral homeland. Today, Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America are strengthening ties, expanding trade and developing cultural cooperation.
