Film: 'Green Sheep Drive'
In southern Russia, fertile land is slowly turning to sand. In Dagestan, Kalmykia, and Astrakhan region, soil has been losing moisture for years due to intense heat and overgrazing.
Communities are fighting back in different ways: in Dagestan, shepherds drive their flocks from the plains to the mountains each spring — a traditional practice that gives pastures time to regenerate. In Kalmykia and Astrakhan, locals plant saxaul (dzhuzgun), a hardy shrub whose deep roots stabilize shifting sands and help restore the land.
The new film by Ruslan Gusarov, Mikhail Burov, and Kirill Puzyrny 'Green Sheep Drive' tells the story of people battling desertification and bringing fertility back to their native soil.
