McKinsey's State of AI 2026: 32% of companies skipped buying software because their coding agents can build it in-house.
The annual survey (1,719 respondents, 97 countries) finds AI everywhere except the P&L:
- 80% say AI made them personally more productive, yet only 37% see any EBIT impact, flat vs last year
- Large companies scaling agents went from 27% to 40%; smaller ones stayed at 22%
- About 1 in 5 say AI operating costs, tokens included, already cap their usage
- 39% expect AI-driven headcount cuts next year, though last year twice as many expected cuts as later reported them
For anyone selling software, the build-vs-buy number matters most: the customer's own coding agent is now on the competitor list. Free 31-page PDF, no email gate.
